At ALM Farm, we are generally respectful of diverse perspectives. It is primarily an organic farm. We abide by organic certification standards as defined by IOPA (Island Organic Producers Assn.) which is accredited by COABC. We believe that by growing organically we contribute to the health of the environment and of the people who share in the abundance produced on the farm.
Organic farming is more than just raising vegetables by a set of rules. It is a dynamic process that continually unfolds in unforeseeable ways. It requires as acute an awareness as the riding of a wild horse. We do have techniques, tools, and experience that guide us, but much of the time we are holding on and trying to follow the flow of the horse.
Our underlying approach is to work with natural processes, by letting things unfold "organically."? We respect the wisdom of nature and its delicate web of relationships. Humans are an important element on the farm, as are animals, plants, stones, water, etc. As people, we take turns as students open to new ways, and then as teachers who pass on what we have learnt.
ALM farm is part of a larger whole: the town of Sooke, Vancouver Island, North America, all swimming in an ocean on this vast and beautiful planet. As members of the wider community, we question what we take and use, as well as what we do with our waste, and how we can do so responsibly and sustainably.
